BLW Journey: The Preparation

Hello! Welcome to my series on my journey of Baby Led Weaning with Jannah! We are a month into our journey now, as she will be 7 months in a few days!

I want to kick this documentation series off with the preparation I did and some basic information about Baby Led Weaning.

BLW (Baby Led Weaning) is feeding your baby regular table food from the start. No purées. The baby chooses food off the plate and eats on their own. The parent does NOT put anything in the baby’s mouth, but rather let’s the baby explore and discover how to eat themselves. Parents may pre-load a spoon or fork and set it on their plate or tray, but may not spoon feed the child.

BLW allows baby to learn how to maneuver food around their mouths and how to chew before swallowing. Traditional weaning (baby food) only teaches them to swallow. Before age 1, food is offered 30 minutes to 1 hour AFTER breastmilk or formula. BEFORE AGE 1, BREASTMILK OR FORMULA IS A CHILD’S MAIN SOURCE OF NUTRITION. BLW babies do not get separate foods during meal time. Instead, they participate in the family meals and eat what everyone else is eating. Here is a handy overview of BLW:

Now I would like to share what materials I’ve gotten so far to assist on our journey.

Luvable Friends 4 Piece Waterproof Bibs with Crumb Catcher, Flamingos. For BLW, bibs that you can just wipe clean are ESSENTIAL to saving your sanity.

Nuby Baby Led Feeding 2 Pack Section Plates. Personally, I prefer and recommend the mats that have a plate built into it, so that way little one can’t just throw the plate, but these will do for now until I can get my hands on some.

The First Years Inside Scoop Suction Sectioned Plate. Suction dishes are so much better as baby can’t just dump their plate all over the place. The detachable rim also helps littles to scoop food up on their own!

Munchkin 6 Pack Soft-Tip Infant Spoons. These are more so designed for spoon feeding, but they were a gift. For BLW short utensils are better as they give baby more control. The mint set shown in the picture below was also a gift, but I don’t know the brand or anything (pretty sure they are just play silverware but hey.. it works haha).

Nuby Yellow/Green Spoon and Fork- 4 Pack. These kind of utensils are much better for BLW, as the shorter handles give baby more control.

Snack containers. Again, I don’t know the brand of these, but I love them! It makes taking snacks on the go much easier!

Munchkin Snack Cathcher-Pink. I just love this thing. This is even better for taking snacks along. And it’s less messy!

Philips Avent My Natural Drinking Cups- 2 pack. These cups are so amazing! These help transition littles to regular cups easier than traditional sippy cups. Jannah hates bottles and anything of the sort. She loves drinking from my cup, so now she has her own!

I am so excited to go through this journey with Jannah and to document it here! Stay tuned for update posts. Thursday I will do another post updating yall on how her first month of eating has gone!
